ロータリーの奉仕理念と綱領の変遷
1922年のロスアンゼルス大会において、国際ロータリークラブ連合会が、国際ロータリーと改称され、定款、細則が抜本的に改正されたことに伴って、「ロータリーの目的」も大幅に改正されました。

ロータリーの目的は次の事項を奨励かつ育成するにある

1923年、決議23-34「ロータリーの目的に基づく諸活動に関するロータリーの方針」が採択され、ＲＩとクラブとロータリアンの機能が明確化されると共に、クラブが行う奉仕活動の新たな指針が確定しました。
現在、決議23-34は社会奉仕だけに適用されドキュメントだと考える人が多いようですが、これが策定された当初は、「ロータリーの目的に基づく諸活動に関するロータリーの方針」という表題がついていたことは、社会奉仕にだけ適用されるものではなく、ロータリーの奉仕活動全般に適用すべきであることを忘れてはなりません。
1927年のオステンド大会で、イギリスの主張を取り入れた目標設定計画Aims and Objects Planに基づいて四大奉仕の原則が決定しました。これに基づいて、1935年、メキシコ・シティ大会において「ロータリーの目的」が変更され、四大奉仕に対応した項目に整理されました。内容は、現在の「ロータリーの目的」とほぼ同じですが、タイトルの原文がObjects of Rotary と複数形であることから、この「ロータリーの目的」は前文と、四箇条の本文から成り立っていると解釈する必要があります。

1950年のデトロイト大会で、決議50-11が採択されて、He profits most who serves bestとService aboveの二つのフレーズが正式にロータリー・モットーとして採択され、ロータリーの奉仕理念が確定しました。
1951年に開催されたアトランティク・シティ大会において、国際ロータリーおよび標準ロータリークラブ定款が改正され、Objects of Rotary がObject of
Rotary と単数形に改められたことによって、従来の四ケ条の「ロータリーの目的」が一ケ条の本文と四つの付随項目となって、現在と全く同じ「ロータリーの目的」に変更され、今日に至っています。
尚、1989年の手続要覧から「奉仕の理想に結ばれた実業人と専門職業人」が「奉仕の理想に結ばれた事業と専門職務に携わる人」に変更されましたが、これは原文が変わったわけではなく、日本語訳のみが変更されたものです。
